DCA has once again shown a warm welcome to our members and the trans, non-binary and intersex community, offering us the opportunity of a free tour on Sunday 6th July to see the exhibition Acts of Creation: On Motherhood.
We asked DCA's Deputy Director and Head of External Relations, Jessica Reid, about how queer identities have been represented in the exhibition.
'Multiple works engage with trans and non-binary experiences of parenting - for instance Del la grace Volcano's MaPa Del, in which intersex artist and activist Volcano offers an intimate view into queer family life conducted beyond gender binaries. MaPa is the name they have chosen as a parent.
There's also Liss Lafleur's But They Can't Steal My Joy, part of the multi-year 'Queer Birth Project', led by LaFleur and sociologist Katherine Sobering. Inspired by feminist artist Judy Chicago’s Birth Project (1980s), the Queer Birth Project gathers and shares birth experiences of LGBTQ+ people in the USA. The first part of the project focused on the body and identity before and after childbirth. The libretto is composed of direct quotes from interviewees performed using a vocoder by soprano Morgan Horning. This is one of my personal favourite works in the show - such a beautiful illustration of the different ways people can experience and relate to pregnancy, parenting and their own bodies. '
Please be aware, that alongside more of the warm or celebratory works in the show, we have been advised that there are several quite tough artworks dealing with loss, infertility and miscarriage. Please be mindful of whether this is a point of discomfort and upset for you and whether you are able to see provocative or challenging material.
