Room to Be collaborating with Dundee Makerspace

ree

Mission 'Boomerang Build' has begun! Our successful pitch at the Dundee SOUP has meant we have the funds to build a new seating and planting area for the Boomerang Community Centre in Stobswell. And as Room to Be loves working in partnership with other community groups, we were keen to reach out to the Dundee Makerspace to see if they'd like to collaborate. Great news! The team are as keen as we are!

We've managed to source an excellent stack of (rather naily) timber that would otherwise be destined for landfill. On Sunday a small band of merry members from both groups laboured together to clear a space for storing the wood. Next step: build a cart to transport the wood from A to B and start hauling. After that, we will process the wood (de-nail / sand / paint) in order to build our design. This is all going to take time, but we would rather recycle this wood than see it go to waste.

This project is going to be a great opportunity for our members to learn some new skills from people who already love to create and build and to see through all stages of the project: designing, prepping, building, decorating, planting and then enjoying the space that they created. If you are interested in getting involved in this community project, feel free to get in touch, you do not need to be a Room to Be member in this instance - just an LGBTQIA+ ally. We are building this for the Boomerang Centre and for the Stobswell Community to enjoy.

Haven't heard of Makerspace? If you are someone keen to build, make, craft and create, but don't have all the tools at your fingertips; or perhaps you want to bounce your ideas and problem solve within a community of creatives, you should consider becoming a member of the Dundee Makerspace. It is a not-for-profit social enterprise providing the tools and facilities for encouraging all kinds of creative endeavours in the arts and sciences. Come along to their open evening on Thursday's from 6-9pm at Cake or Dice on Commercial Street (they are based downstairs).
